The fishing season in the Limousin commences this year March 14. Plenty of Trout fishing on the local River Issoire and Etang de la Cote. Daily permits available!
The Haute Vienne, one of the 3 departments of the Limousin region, has thousands of lakes and 1,956 kilometers of 1st category rivers and streams. The fast flowing rivers with plentiful supplies of trout, and rich deep waters of the lakes are reputed for their variety of fish. Most towns and villages have communal lakes which can be fished with a daily permit costing from €10. A 15 day holiday permit for visitors (which covers a whole family) costs only €32. The license permits you to fish in all rivers and streams that have a right of access on public and farm land. The many superb "plans d'eau", listed as 2nd category waters, also provide excellent fishing: Lac St Pardoux to the west of Bellac is about 330 hectares and is free fishing for license holders. The lake is also a huge centre for water sports, beaches and swimming. Providing challenging fishing, it does contain some very big fish. The larger Lac de Vassiviere to the east of Limoges (1,000 hectares) is reputed for its carpe and pike. There are many similar lakes, some privately owned but for which tickets can be purchased, as well as communal lakes providing a good day out for families with younger children. |
Around Mezieres-sur-Issoire there are hundreds of lakes and many miles of streams. There are two categories of water in France, 1st and 2nd category. The latter is open all year round and is predominately for coarse fishing. Summer temperatures restrict salmon and trout fishing except in some deep cool waters of the deeper clear lakes. Day tickets are available to fly fisherman. The Rivers Briance, Combade, Gartempe, and Vienne all offer magnificent trout fishing. Etang de la Cote at Mezieres-sur-Issoire is a coarse fishery (and virtually on our doorstep). Carp to over 30lbs have been caught and catfish to 50lb in this small lake of some 2.5 hectares. The larger fishing lake Etang des Bregeres at St Barbant about 10 kms away is an excellent mixed fishery for good short sessions with many tench and large carp. It is also very pictoresque.
